Not fitness related, but health related.⠀
This is me. Getting ready to down some gnarly pancakes at a cafe with my wife. (Behind the camera I swear!)⠀
Here's the thing: we tend to be way too hard on ourselves. We try to lose too much weight, train way too hard, and not focus on a balance that ensures sustainability. ⠀
2 pancakes never made anyone fat, just like one killer workout never made anyone fit. It all adds up. ⠀
Need a moment to reset? Cool! You're human! Take care of yourself first and your goals will be waiting for you. Find YOUR balance. ⠀
Some will say this is too lenient, and it'll just enable people to be lazy. Yeah ok, whatever. Continue being miserable, dude. I'm going to smash some delicious pancakes on the weekend and then come back and crush it during the week.⠀
Don't waste a moment trying to be someone you're not. True strength is inside. ⠀

This is Val at the top of Old Man Storr in Scotland. Here's what she has to say: "After spending last fall and winter in the hospital I was physically a mess. I was unable to lift small packages and I couldn’t walk half a block. My best friend suggested a personal trainer and even better she gifted me with sessions so that I would be able to recover and be strong enough to travel to Scotland. And this is how NW Forge and Mike and Mckayla became a part of my life. Each week was so exciting as I made gains and new PRs. (I am a big fan of deadlifts and I have a love/hate relationship with squats). ⠀
Fast forward to October 10th, I left for New York where I spent two days walking the city and museums and I did it! I did it without pain or effort and every step of my 26,0000 step days, I thanked Mike. Yesterday, I climbed a mountain, Old Man Storr (pictured), on the Isle of Skye in Scotland. My legs carried me and my back and core were strong and again I thanked Mike and NW Forge for being able to do this trek with little effort and no pain. I am incredibly strong and I am looking forward to more. More strength, more stamina, more PRs and more time working out with Mike. NW Forge has become an important part of my life, Mckayla handles all my schedule changes, Mike supports so many aspects of my life in our sessions, physical, mental and spiritual in some cases. I would recommend NW Forge to anyone who is looking for a supportive, capable and adaptable trainer who is committed to your progress."⠀
That's what we are about: Empowering real people to live life more fully.⠀

This is a great post from @pheasyque :⠀
Old school post. I know I've posted it many times but I feel like it should be seen often to help new followers understand how to deadlift. -⠀
One of my "all time favorite". This is the first analogy I came up with, that finally clicked in my head when I first learned how to do a proper deadlift. I really hope it’ll make sense to all of you. -⠀
❌Most people treat the deadlift like a “fishing pole”: -⠀
where the pole = back, ⠀
the fisherman = legs,⠀
and the fish = the weight. -⠀
When you try to pull the fish with the pole, most of the stress is placed on the pole itself, while the fisherman is basically glued to the ground. If you try to carch a heavy fish, the pole would bend until it’d break. That’s exactly how you develop lower back pain: you try to pull the bar with your back instead of using your legs, aka “doing the fishing pole deadlift”. -⠀
✅ On the other hand think about the deadlift as a pulley, where:⠀
-⠀ the pulley = the back, ⠀
the man pulling the rope = your legs, -⠀
It becomes much safer. The pulley (your back) does NOT move: it’s blocked, it’s fixed. Sure it holds the weight up, but the load is carried and hooked to the rope, which is pulled by the hands (your legs). This serves as an analogy to explain that your back stays tight & firm, your hands are hooked to the weight, while the “pull” is done by your legs. If the weight would be too heavy, you’d end up not being able to “pull the rope”, without breaking it though! You rather not lift the weight than lift it with bad technique.⠀
You need to push those feet through the ground to pull the weight up. -⠀
So, which deadlift do you do? The “fishing pole deadlift” or the “pulley deadlift?” -⠀

Book club! 📖 ⠀
This month we are reading Principles by Ray Dalio. ⠀
In 1975, Ray Dalio founded an investment firm, Bridgewater Associates, out of his two-bedroom apartment in New York City. Forty years later, Bridgewater has made more money for its clients than any other hedge fund in history and grown into the fifth most important private company in the United States, according to Fortune magazine. Dalio himself has been named to Time magazine’s list of the 100 most influential people in the world. Along the way, Dalio discovered a set of unique principles that have led to Bridgewater’s exceptionally effective culture, which he describes as “an idea meritocracy that strives to achieve meaningful work and meaningful relationships through radical transparency.” It is these principles, and not anything special about Dalio—who grew up an ordinary kid in a middle-class Long Island neighborhood—that he believes are the reason behind his success.⠀
Join us March 2 at 10:30am to discuss this great book over coffee. ⠀
NOTICE!! You do NOT have to read the entire book to come to book club! Only get halfway through? No problem! Show up anyway.⠀

Some uncomfortable truths for you today:⠀
1. Each of us are where we are in our fitness journey because of our choices as individuals. Not because of anyone else. OWN IT. ⠀
2. Put YOUR health first. Your family, job, community, and friends will be better for it. ⠀
3. Love yourself like your life depends on it, because it does. ⠀
4. Shakes, programs, waist trainers, and pills will not 'fix' anything by themselves. A PLAN encompasses many tools to help you be successful. If something is preaching about 'easy' or 'just follow our one trick' then it's probably a gimmick.⠀
5. Success in the long run is adopting a new framework of healthy choices because you LOVE yourself and you WANT to feel good.⠀
6. Having a good relationship with yourself is a superpower. You can do amazing things with good headspace, and your capacity to GET AFTER IT will increase dramatically. ⠀
7. Master the basics before getting fancy: sleep, water, nutrition, training FREQUENCY, and stress management.
Arun earned the Iron Hammer Award back in July 2018. He lost 50 pounds in a very healthy manner with our program and has since lost another 20. He’s not just lean, but healthy.
One thing that’s special about Arun is his attitude. He’s a humble guy that simply wants to do well and give his best in everything. Kind hearted, and always looking for the positive. Arun had his difficulties and valleys with us, and for good reason.
A hard worker in and out of the gym, he would start his day at the Forge and then work 10-12 hour days 6 days a week. (That’s right). HARD worker. Sometimes too hard. We actually had to scale things back a little to fit his body at the time. Now he’s eating more carbs than ever and has become quite the machine mentally and physically.
Since training with us he has started meditating, he reads more, and begins his college career soon.
We are so excited for him, and you should be too!

Happy new year y’all!
Just a reminder:
✅ Master the basics before making things complicated. Your program only works as hard as you do (consistently)
✅ It’s you vs you, and you owe nobody anything, so you can’t lose. Have fun with it. ✅ What you do matters. Your actions have weight to them twofold: 1. Somebody is looking up to you so your example is powerful. 2. Every small decision is a move forward or backwards in your journey (no matter how small)
✅ You matter. Your health matters. We are rooting for you no matter where or how you get after it. Find what you love and dive in.
2018 has been great for us. We are incredibly blessed to share 2019 with you. -Mike (Ps-this was a little fishing trip we took a few days ago. I figured it was better than another 2019 stock photo in your feed)
